The Electric Car and the City

Hosted by Priya Khanchandani, Editor of Icon Magazine, Esme Hawes, Assistant Curator at the V&A and senior Jaguar designers, Alister Whelan (Interior Design Director), Dominic Najafi (Chief Creative Exterior Designer) and Lizete Druka (Design Experience Specialist), this event will explore how developments in electric mobility, autonomous technology and sustainability are impacting car design and shaping our cities.

What to expect

In the next twenty years, the electrification of the automotive industry will demand continual changes to car design, our built environment and urban infrastructure Connected, autonomous cars will create a third space between the home and office. New models of mobility will emerge, challenging the traditional view of how we own and use our cars.

The Jaguar design process begins five years in advance, on vehicles with a lifespan of 8-10 years. How do we predict what will happen in the future? A panel of senior Jaguar designers and design experts discuss future trends in car design, the impact of electric vehicles and debate how to design for a changing world.

Speakers

Priya Khanchandani

Priya Khanchandani is the Editor of Icon Magazine. She is a writer, researcher and the Curator of the India Pavilion at London Design Biennale 2018. Previously she worked as Head of Arts Programmes for India at the British Council.

Alistair Whelan

Alister studied Transport Design at Coventry University and worked as an exterior designer at Audi before joining Jaguar in 2000, where he was responsible for the interiors of award-winning concept and production models including C-X75, C-XF, XF and F-TYPE. Alistair has led his team to create the interiors for the Jaguar I-PACE concept in 2016, Jaguar E-PACE in 2017, I-PACE production car in 2018 and most recently the 2020 Jaguar XE. Alistair continues to work on the interior design of all future Jaguar models as Interior Design Director.

Dominic Najafi

Dominic Najafi is Chief Exterior Designer in Jaguar’s Creative Design team. He graduated from Coventry University’s Transport Design Course in 2003 and began his automotive design career at Bentley, before joining Jaguar in 2012. Dominic has created advanced exterior design concepts for vehicles such as the latest XF, F-PACE, E-PACE and I-PACE.

Lizete Druka

Lizete Druka began her career at Jaguar as part of the small Design team that created the revolutionary all-electric I-PACE. As a Design Experience Specialist, she is now part of the interdisciplinary Design team working on strategic and long term visionary projects for Jaguar Land Rover. By exploring the intersect of design, technology and experience, Lizete contextualises future implications and opportunities around electrification, autonomy, and the environmental drivers that are shaping the mobility landscape.

Esme Hawes

Esme Hawes is an assistant curator at the V&A and of Cars: Accelerating the Modern World. From 2017 to 2018 she was assistant curator for the V&A Gallery at Design Society in Shenzhen, China as well as the Pavilion of Applied Arts at the Venice Biennale. She has contributed to various projects at the V&A including the UK Pavilion at London Design Biennale in 2018.
