Design Museum Academy Children's Workshop
Design Camp: Turn Plastic into Fabric for 8 to 11 year olds
In this hands-on workshop, children will learn how to transform ordinary plastic bags into fusible fabric, a durable and eco-friendly material that can be used for all kinds of creative projects.
Plastic is here to stay, but that doesn't mean we can’t make it work for us. When a plastic bag is discarded, it often ends up in landfills or waterways and it can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. It’s time to rethink how we use plastic waste and turn it into something both useful and beautiful.
In this full-day workshop led by design studio Crafterscoolclub, children will explore the possibilities of sustainable design and upcycling, and learn about designers and artists who work creatively with plastic to revalue and repurpose it.
Participants will learn how to transform ordinary plastic bags and soft plastics into fusible fabrics using techniques they can replicate at home. They will experiment with the creative potential of this durable upcycled plastic, and find out how it can be used to make functional items such as bags and pouches, accessories, wall art and more.
Whether children are new to crafting or experienced makers, they will learn how to take something that’s usually considered waste and turn it into a functional and artistic fabric. They will leave with both a new skill and a unique handmade piece. This workshop isn’t just about making fabric, it's about reimagining how we can use discarded materials to create fun and practical items at home.
What will they learn?
