Design Museum Academy Children's Workshop
Design Camp: Strange Designs for 8 to 11 year olds
Inspired by unusual designs, children will be encouraged to reimagine everyday objects in this creative session led by artist and educator Sal Jones. They will take inspiration from our exhibition, 'The World of Tim Burton,' and have access to part of the museum’s handling collection to create their own designs that challenge convention.
This workshop will explore shape, form and design ideas, referencing the work of leading artists and designers and investigating their sources of inspiration.
Participants will visit our The World of Tim Burton exhibition for inspiration. They will also get a chance to study iconic product designs in the handling collection as points of reference for designing their own pieces.
Attendees will be given a series of tasks and challenges to inspire creativity and to develop their own ideas and outcomes. They will use a variety of techniques including drawing, collage and 3D modelling in dry materials, to create their own weird and wonderful designs and prototypes.
Participants will:
• Develop observational drawing skills
• Develop creative thinking and idea development
• Learn about leading artists and designers
• Use different materials and techniques to create prototypes
Please note:
• This workshop includes a short visit to our exhibition, The World of Tim Burton.
• Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
• This workshop is suitable for ages 8–11.
• All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but participants will need to bring a packed lunch.
