DESIGN MUSEUM ACADEMY Young People Workshop

Design Camp: Robot Olympics for 8 to 11 year olds

An engaging workshop to learn how to create robots to compete in various games of the Design Museum’s Olympics using the BBC Micro:Bit.

What to expect

In this creative workshop, young people will learn how processors work and use code to control electronics. At the end of the day, they will take home their very own Micro:Bit (only, not the robot) to continue to code and create from home.

Robotics challenges will vary from speed races to long jumping. There will be an introduction to microcontrollers – small computers that can be inserted into electrical circuits to allow people to digitise the world around them.

Participants will go from notes on paper to writing code on a computer to make the robots move. They will also learn about the history of robotics and how revolutions such as the internet of things could affect our lives in the future.

Please note that this workshop is ideal for beginners, and may not suit those who are super skilled coders.

Throughout the day, there will be presentations and gallery visits to inspire all future designers!
