Design Museum Academy Young People Workshop

Design Camp: Natural Dyes for 11 to 14 year olds

Learn how to use fresh and dried flowers to naturally dye silk in this eco–conscious workshop with designer Georgia Bosson to create your own hand-dyed hair ties and scrunchies.

What to expect

An introduction to natural dyes to explore bundle dyeing techniques, how to make natural dyes and pigments and learn about how different natural fibres respond to them.

Learning outcomes:

• Learn how to dye silk with bundle dying using only natural flora and seasonal plants along with a selection of carefully dried flowers.

• Create two unique lengths of delicate silk that we will use to create a hair band or scrunchie to take home at the end of the workshop.

• Get the knowledge and skills required to make your own bundle–dyed items, using easy to find materials and simple equipment.

• Explore creating dye baths from waste foodstuffs and get inspired to start your own dying journey.
