Design Museum Academy Young People Workshop

Design Camp: Digital Character Design for 11 to 14 year olds

In this introductory course, young people will be introduced to character design inspired by Tim Burton's imagination. They will design their own characters with plasticine and then learn how to redesign them using 3D modelling software.

What to expect

The morning will involve a trip to The World of Tim Burton exhibition where participants will take some inspiration from the characters in Burton’s universe. Participants will then start their character development process, using paper, pens and plasticine to explore ideas for their characters.

In the afternoon, participants will learn how to recreate their characters digitally using 3D modelling techniques and tools such as TinkerCAD and Blender.

This session combines guided instruction with individual creative exploration and collaborative brainstorming.

Learning outcomes:

• Learning about Tim Burton’s design process and style

• Character conceptualisation and design

• Digital rendering and sculpting techniques

• Gaining confidence using creative technologies

Please note:

• This workshop includes a short visit to our exhibition, The World of Tim Burton.

• Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

• This workshop is suitable for ages 11–14.

• All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but participants will need to bring a packed lunch.
