DESIGN MUSEUM ACADEMY Young People Workshop
Design Camp: Coding and Interactive Storytelling for 11 to 14 year olds
In this introductory workshop, young people will learn to code by writing interactive stories inspired by Tim Burton’s unique imagination. They will write exciting narratives and turn them into simple text-based video games using the coding engine Twine.
What to expect
The morning will involve a trip to The World of Tim Burton where the young people will get inspired by Burton's creative process and worldbuilding. They will then start working on their own imaginative worlds.
After lunch, participants will learn about Twine, where they will build their interactive game worlds and learn about coding concepts like Booleans, if & else statements and variables, to create short text-based immersive experiences.
This course combines guided instruction with individual creative exploration and collaborative brainstorming.
Learning outcomes:
• Learning about Tim Burton’s design process and worldbuilding
• Basics of storytelling and narrative design
• Basic coding concepts and how to apply them to logic problems.
• Visualising storylines and creating mapping frameworks for them
• Gain confidence using creative technologies
Please note:
• This workshop includes a short visit to our exhibition, The World of Tim Burton.
• Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
• This workshop is suitable for ages 11–14.
• All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but participants will need to bring a packed lunch.
Facilitator
Joe Hoole
Hoole is a multimedia artist and researcher whose work focuses on access to technology, and he teaches digital tools to students aged 6 to 60 years old. Hoole has taught on the Design Museum's Digital Design programmes since 2017, and currently teaches on the Computational Arts Bachelors programme at Camberwell College of Arts, UAL. Hoole is the founder of a Community Interest Corporation, Tinker Studios, that keeps to his commitment of teaching tech to all.
