Colleges and Further Education hands-on design workshops
One-hour workshops enable students to get close to innovative and iconic design objects. Through product analysis and creative design tasks students explore the relationship between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. They develop visual recording skills, explore the process of design, and are supported to communicate design intentions.

Exploring the relationship of function to form, a collection of domestic products with unusual aesthetics encourage students to consider how playful design impacts on users.
From the Anglepoise to the Plumen light bulb, the museum’s range of contemporary lights provides insights into the importance of functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics, sustainability and technology in design.
Most major designers will design a chair at some point in their career. It is the ultimate test of a designer’s ability to innovate with a familiar product through style, technology and materials. In this session students evaluate folding chairs, and have a chance to think about new opportunities for innovation.
Innovations in materials, technology and manufacturing are used to reflect on challenges and opportunities in sustainable design. This session also discusses the responsibilities of designers present and future to consider the whole lifecycle of a product.
