Design Museum Academy Adult Workshop

Workshop: Sashiko Repair with TOAST

Learn how to repair garments using sashiko, a traditional technique to reinforce clothes with embroidered patches, in this half-day workshop run by TOAST Repair specialists.

What to expect

Join lifestyle brand TOAST to learn sashiko, a traditional mending technique that will extend the life of your garments for years to come. Meaning 'little stabs' in Japanese, sashiko reinforces clothing with decorative stitching and patches.

You will learn from TOAST Repair specialists, who will demonstrate the technique and teach you how to creatively transform small holes or tears in a garment into something unique.

The facilitators will share their knowledge on invisible and visible mending, helping you to select the technique best suited to the fabric and type of repair for your item of clothing.

By taking the time to restore a well-loved item and highlight its worn areas, we rethink our relationship with clothing, help reduce our environmental impact, and give new life to our clothing.

This workshop is inspired by our current display Tomorrow’s Wardrobe, curated by Future Observatory, the Design Museum’s national research programme for the green transition. The free exhibition presents design research and innovation for a future of fashion that is both stylish and sustainable.

Please note:

• Bringing your own garments is optional; additional materials will be provided

• Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment

• This workshop is for adults (18+)
