Workshop: Build the Enzo Mari Sedia P Chair

In this hands-on workshop led by RubinoWilson, learn how to make a wooden chair inspired by Enzo Mari's iconic 'Sedia P', following a visit to the exhibition Enzo Mari curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist with Francesca Giacomelli.

What to expect

Enzo Mari, one of the greatest Italian designers of the 20th century, formulated his seminal project Proposal for a self-design (Proposta per un’autoprogrettazione) in 1973. Using the simplest construction techniques, he devised instructions for the self-design of 19 models of furniture comprising only wooden boards and nails. These were published as a catalogue that anyone could request, for the price of postage. This radical proposal hoped to democratise design.

This 5-hour workshop will enable participants to experience Mari’s practice of open source and discover his design philosophy around simplicity and functionality as well as the importance of craftsmanship, precision and attention to detail in creating furniture.

• The dimensions of the completed chair are 85 × 50 × 52 cm

• This workshop is suitable for all aged 18+, including beginners

• Light refreshments and all materials will be provided for the duration of the session

The workshop includes a visit to our 'Enzo Mari curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist with Francesca Giacomelli' exhibition on the same day following the museum's opening hours.
