Community Course for over 60’s

Make Your Own My Naturewatch Camera

My Naturewatch is a collaborative design research project between the Interaction Research Studio, Goldsmiths University and the Royal College of Art, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. It brought to the creation of digital devices to collect visual and audio content about wildlife around the UK. This initiative aims at promoting positive engagements with nature (and technology).

Following a four-part course at the Design Museum in early 2020, a number of the organisations who have been using the My Naturewatch devices to support their conservation work, community engagement, outreach and more were invited to share their feedback (watch the video below).

Course Brief

In this four-part course, learn how to make the My Naturewatch Camera, as featured recently on BBC Springwatch.

My Naturewatch Camera is a wildlife camera you can easily make yourself. It automatically takes pictures when it sees movement. Leave the camera outside to see the elusive creatures that are living amongst us.

In addition to making the camera you will also have the opportunity to learn about local wildlife through a guided walk of Holland Park, learn about the design and technology of the Naturewatch camera and take pictures of wildlife around the Design Museum.

This course is open to over 60’s and adults who live in the tri-borough area of Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham. You can also bring along a friend, family member or carer to the course.

Please note that participants need to bring along:

  • A smartphone

  • A large soft drinks bottle uncrushed if you have one

No prior experience or knowledge is required to take part in this course. All materials will also be provided. The Design Museum asks that participants commit to all four sessions. This course is open to all abilities.
