What to expect

Digital technologies enable us to do more with less, providing the tools, insights and strategies for tackling a vast range of challenges. At the same time, these technologies also create new problems, be they issues of privacy, centralisation of power, energy consumption or even racial bias.

Led by Stephanie Hankey, co-founder of the Tactical Technology Collective, this one-day workshop will provide a deep dive into data and technology ethics and best-practice. Taking the rise of smart-devices in the home as its main case study, participants will begin with an overview of some of the blind-spots and ethical challenges of technology design. Afterwards, you will work through a series of hands-on challenges seeking to re-imagine the role of the designer in the digital home, drawing on the museum’s current exhibition Home Futures and additional examples.

This workshop is aimed at designers, technologists and those working with data who want to develop their skills and understanding of human-centred technology design.
