Martino Gamper and Francis Upritchard: Lunch and Studio Visit

Martino and Francis have a studio dining table that seats 25 people, and a kitchen that daily feeds their assistants and friends with an eccentric mix of healthy vegetarian food. They generously welcome The Design Circle into their East London studio for an intimate lunch and a chance to see what they are currently working on.

Martino Gamper works from a studio in East London with his wife, the acclaimed artist Francis Upritchard, with whom he often collaborates.

Martino Gamper is internationally recognised for his furniture design. Starting out as an apprentice furniture maker in Italy he went on to study under Ron Arad at the RCA. Gamper’s project 100 Chairs in 100 Days, where he created new furniture from found items, was category winner in the Museum’s Designs of the Year awards 2008. Since then his practice has ranged from bespoke commissions and international solo museum shows, to curating the exhibition ‘design is a state of mind’ at the Serpentine Gallery.

Francis is a sculptor who has shown extensively internationally and has held recent solo shows at various venues including the Hammer Museum, Nottingham Contemporary, Secession, MIMOCA, Anton Kern and Kate Macgarry Galleries.
