Join electronic artist Daniel Avery, DJ, musician, and broadcaster Nabihah Iqbal, and design and nightclub historian Dr Catharine Rossi for this talk on nightlife architecture.
This an online event.
To coincide with Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers - The Virtual Tour, this panel discussion explores how design and architecture have shaped nightclubs.
Drawing upon the spatial typologies, interiors, lighting, and sound systems of different clubs from around the world, and other environments where electronic music is experienced, the panel will discuss the significance of design in creating spaces for experimentation and alternative lifestyles after dark.
Featuring
Electronic musician and DJ Daniel Avery released his third studio album Love + Light in 2020, a surprise release coming into existence at the beginning of lockdown. The record arrived just months after the full-length Illusion Of Time, a collaboration with Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini. Avery’s seminal 2013 work Drone Logic is considered one of the most important techno albums of the last decade by critics and fans alike.
Dr Catharine Rossi is a design historian interested in socially and politically engaged approaches to design and design history. She curated projects on nightclubs at the Venice Architecture Biennale and London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, and most recently Night Fever with the Vitra Design Museum, which is next touring to V&A Dundee in 2021.
Nabihah Iqbal is a musician, producer, DJ and broadcaster from London. Her debut album, ‘Weighing of the Heart’ was released in December 2017 and she is currently an artist-in-residence at Somerset House. Aside from working on her own music, Nabihah has hosted a bi-weekly show on NTS Radio, and has also been presenting shows on BBC Asian Network and BBC Radio 1.
