Models for a Different Society Part 1
Exploring the legacy of pioneering Italian designer Enzo Mari, this event is the first in a series of discussions with contemporary designers, makers and curators influenced by Mari’s approach. With designers Michael Marriot and Studiomama.
This event is in dialogue with the exhibition Enzo Mari curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist with Francesca Giacomelli, and the accompanying free display Grazie Enzo: Contemporary Responses to Enzo Mari, which both which celebrate the life and work of the iconic artist, thinker, writer and educator.
Mari had a firm commitment to creating designs that were accessible to everyone. His seminal instruction booklet ‘Autoprogettazione’ (Proposal for self-design), is one such example, predating open-source design practices.
Designers Michael Marriot and Studio Mama will join Design Museum Curator Rachel Hajek to discuss what they owe to Mari and how his approach and values continue to provide inspiration. Exploring their shared ideas about unlearning, radical generosity, playfulness and social responsibility they reflect on what we can learn from Mari.
Speakers
Hajek is a curator, writer and researcher based in London. She has previously held positions at Tate Modern and is currently Curator at the Design Museum where she has contributed to numerous exhibitions and displays including 'Ai Weiwei: Making Sense'. ‘Enzo Mari curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist with Francesca Giacomelli’ has been curated for the Design Museum by Hajek.
Marriott is an industrial designer often making things in small batches, and overseeing every stage of the design process. He is interested in making functional objects that are not led by fashion, marketing or fads.
Founded by Nina Tolstrup and Jack Mama in 2000, Studiomama is a multidisciplinary design studio. Their sustainable and playful approach has resulted in an influential and socially-relevant portfolio that encompasses architecture, interior design, jewellery, exhibition design, curation, products and furniture. Their work pushes the limits of material recycling, extends product lifespans and explores new forms of open-sourcing and upcycling, challenging conventional business models and distribution methods.
