Design Museum Academy Children's Workshop

Design Camp: Drawing and Storytelling for 8 to 11 year olds

Combining observational drawing with zine-making, and inspired by film director Wes Anderson’s visual storytelling, children will learn how to capture details through live sketching and build a visual narrative on a zine or concertina book.

Priority booking for members.

What to expect

In this hands-on workshop, children will learn observational drawing techniques and sketch around the museum to capture details about the building, the objects on display and people.

Exploring illustrated zines and books as references, participants will explore how their composition and layout can shape a story or theme, and learn different ways of folding paper to create a concertina book or poster zine. They'll design various layout ideas to produce their own zine with drawings and collages, which they can present to the group.

Learning outcomes:

  • Observational drawing techniques

  • Fundamentals of zine-making

  • Visual storytelling and communication

  • Presenting their work

  • Technical skills using mixed media on paper

Please note:

  • This workshop will include a short visit to the Wes Anderson: The Archives exhibition

  • This workshop is suitable for children aged 8-11. All participants must be dropped off and picked up by an adult. You can find additional information in the sections below

  • Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment

  • All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but participants will need to bring a packed lunch
