About the course
The October Revolution represents one of the most significant moments in our architectural and design history. Now one hundred years on, this lecture series explores the design and wider cultural context of that time, as well as its impact on the present.
In this lecture, Director of GRAD Gallery Elena Sudakova and curator and art historian Konstantin Akinsha examined the impact of Lenin’s death on Russian design and architecture. Focusing on Lenin’s mausoleum, the lecture examines the transformations it brought about to the role of the designer and to the nature of Soviet propaganda.

Elena Sudakova
Elena Sudakova is founder and director of GRAD, an engaging visual and social platform that encourages creative dialogues and questions long established preconceptions of Russian and post-Soviet culture. Known best for bringing to light historical and archival materials from Russian museums, GRAD has also commissioned full scale installations in London by international contemporary artists.
Konstantin Akinsha
Konstantin Akinsha is an art historian, journalist and curator with a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He has received several awards for his investigative cultural journalism and is the curator of numerous exhibitions exploring Russian Art and Design including ‘Russian Modernism: Cross Currents of German and Russian Art, 1907-1917 (Neue Galerie, New York, 2015).
