Design Museum Academy Adult Workshop
Workshop: Feature Film Storyboarding with Jay Clarke
Explore the role of storyboarding in visual storytelling in this hands-on introduction with Jay Clarke, lead storyboard artist on Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs.
Join Jay Clarke, lead storyboard artist on Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, for an in-depth introduction to feature film storyboarding.
Drawing on over 20 years of experience working across animated and live-action films for Wes Anderson and Aardman, Jay offers an insider's perspective on storyboarding as a core tool of visual storytelling. You will explore what storyboarding is, how it is used within the film industry, and examine examples from Isle of Dogs and Shaun the Sheep.
Jay will lead a live drawing workshop, guiding you through thumbnail storyboards for a short scene from the Isle of Dogs script. Discover behind-the-scenes examples from the film, then storyboard an unseen section of script yourself, translating ideas from page to image. The session will explore key elements of film language, including camera angles, movement, animation, and posing.
Learning outcomes:
- Creating your own storyboard for a short scene.
- Learn pro tips for camera angles, movement and character poses.
- Visual storytelling skills that you can apply to animation and shorts.
Please note:
- A visit to Wes Anderson: The Archives is included in your ticket price, so you can visit on the day in your own time (before or after your workshop session).
- You are welcome to bring your own tools, digital or analogue (from a sketchbook or post-it notes to a digital tablet or laptop). We can also provide a MacBook and drawing tablet. Please let us know your preference at checkout.
- Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
- This workshop is suitable for adults 18+.
