Talk: Stop-Motion Animation & Performance
Join LAIKA’s animators Tom Carey and Amy Greenspan for a conversation exploring the technical processes of stop-motion animation, delving into the delicate choreography of movement and expressions that bring film characters to life.
Please note that this event's ticket doesn't include a visit to the exhibition. If you wish to visit the display before the talk, limited tickets are available to book as an add-on - slots are available from 17:30. The exhibition is also open to the public daily, from 10:00 to 17:00.
Discover the behind-the-scenes processes in filming Wildwood and how creatives adapt to develop new insights. From the studio, to the archive, to the ‘puppet hospital’, this will be a rare moment to gain insights into industry tricks and insider knowledge.
Tense muscles, wind blowing through fur, wet hair; the on-screen appearance of such fine details present a frame-by-frame metamorphosis planned with technical detail by a dedicated team in departments including Puppet Fabrication, Animation, Stop-motion Rigging, Lighting, Camera and Visual Effects.
The unique techniques created by LAIKA over their six films, have built an expertise that convinces audiences the surreal worlds of LAIKA exist beyond our imagination. In each stage of production, a wide array of decisions and research influence the performance of a character’s personality.
The discussion will consider the framework of theatre to explore stop motion animation performance: creating characters that interact with real sets and real lighting has a dynamic live element; parameters of timing and rhythm to capture real moments.
This is an unmissable event for design and architecture students, design practitioners and enthusiasts, stop motion lovers, as well as fans of LAIKA’s animated universe.
Featuring animators Tom Carey and Amy Greenspan.
