Support Systems (Designers in Residence Takeover)

Join the Design Museum for a day of talks, performances, science experiments, screenings and workshops curated by this year’s Designers in Residence; Studio Ayaskan, Yinka Danmole, Chris Hildrey and Soomi Park.

What to expect

This one day event brings together a spectacular line-up of speakers across the fields of design, architecture, science, film, food and performance to reflect on topics including; machine intelligence, diasporic identities, homelessness, and representations of nature through technology.

Crystal Landscapes
Performance
Creative Workshop

Crystal Landscapes is a live performance and experiment by the design-duo Studio Ayaskan that sheds light on their design process that investigates connections between technology and nature and the lifecycles of materials.

For the performance Studio Ayaskan will combine natural stones, pigments and sand-like materials with liquid ‘hot ice’ solution, to reveal the process of solidifying a crystal landscape.

This will followed by a brief talk from the designers about their inspiration behind the Design Museum residency and their studio approach as a whole.

Objects of Desire
Talk/Screening
Bakala Auditorium

Objects of Desire is a two-part event exploring the relationship between emerging technologies and human desires.

The screening will consist of films by designers and filmmakers that illustrate the complex relationship between machines and humans. It includes Soomi Park’s recent project for her residency at the Design Museum, Embarrassed Robots (2017).

Following the screening there will be a discussion between Soomi Park, Nestor Pestana, Joseph Popper and Amina Abbas-Nazari.

Bauhaus and Ulm rooms

Yinka Danmole is hosting a salon for members of the diasporic community to come together for a conversation about diasporic language and heritage over a traditional West African cuisine.

Participants will reflect on the visual representation of language through analysing expression, tones and variations of diasporic dialects. Guests will also discuss how our perception of cultural heritage has been affected by new technology.

Visitors are welcome to drop in and join the conversation.

Streetwise Opera performance
Atrium

Chris Hildrey invites Streetwise Opera to perform a piece in response to Satyagraha – an opera by Philip Glass. Streetwise Opera is an award-winning charity that uses music to help people make positive changes in their lives. Working with people who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness they run workshop programmes across England and stage critically-acclaimed operas.

Chris Hildrey leads a panel discussion exploring the role of design and the arts in engaging with homelessness and other vulnerable areas of society. Speakers include:
