In Conversation: The Graphic Language of Wes Anderson’s Films
Join celebrated Wes Anderson collaborators, graphic design director Erica Dorn and author and designer Annie Atkins, in conversation with Chief Curator Johanna Agerman Ross.
Join us for an insightful evening to explore the meticulously crafted world of one of cinema’s most distinctive storytellers through a conversation with two of his longstanding collaborators – renowned illustrator and designer Erica Dorn and graphic designer and prop-maker Annie Atkins. Both have been key contributors to the distinctive visual language of Wes Anderson’s films, and will discuss how typography, illustration, props and ephemera can shape narratives, character development and world-building – from meticulously crafted fictional documents to emotionally charged handmade details.
Moderated by the exhibition’s co-curator and Chief Curator Johanna Agerman Ross, this in-depth conversation will explore the role of graphic design and props in filmmaking set within the framework of Wes Anderson: The Archives.
This is an unmissable event for film enthusiasts, graphic designers, students, professionals and Wes Anderson fans.
This event is part of the programme of Wes Anderson: the Archives. This landmark exhibition charts the evolution of Wes Anderson’s films from early experiments in the 1990s to recent productions as well as collaborations with key long-standing creative partners.
Please note that your event ticket doesn’t include a visit to the exhibition.
Speakers
After eight years as a London-based graphic designer, Erica discovered the film industry in 2018 through a role supporting Annie Atkins’ work on Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs. She has since led the graphics department for a total of five Wes Anderson productions, including The French Dispatch, Asteroid City and the Phoenician Scheme. She has also collaborated with other acclaimed directors including Steve McQueen and has built a diverse portfolio of branding and commercials.
Annie has designed graphics for many Oscar-nominated and winning films, such as Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs, and Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, and West Side Story and the latest Indiana Jones. Her first book, Fake Love Letters, prompted Jeff Goldblum to write that “Annie makes the real more supremely alive and utterly magical”. Her second book, Letters from the North Pole, was shortlisted at the British Book Awards.
Johanna Agerman Ross was appointed the Conran Foundation Chief Curator at the Design Museum in 2023. She was previously curator of twentieth century and contemporary furniture and product design at the V&A where she co-curated the new permanent gallery Design 1900-Now and launched Make Good: Rethinking Material Futures, focused on design and the climate emergency. She founded the international design journal Disegno in 2011, which she edited for five years. She is still Disegno’s director.
