Learning event Talk
Design Practice and Motherhood
Join a conversation on how motherhood and creative practice shape one another, chaired by curator Danielle Thom, with Simone Brewster, Laxmi Hussein, Emefa Cole, and Hettie Judah.
Priority booking for members.
Join us for an evening event that brings together leading voices to explore how creative practice intersects with care, identity and cultural expectation.
Chaired by curator Danielle Thom, this conversation invites designer Simone Brewster, artist Laxmi Hussein, designer Emefa Cole and writer and curator Hettie Judah to reflect on how motherhood shapes, challenges and enriches artistic and design work today, and how creative practice, in turn, shapes motherhood.
Moving beyond stereotypes, the panel considers visibility, labour, time and the emotional landscapes that inform making. From personal narratives to wider social contexts, the discussion opens space for nuance, honesty and critical insight.
Join an open conversation that welcomes diverse perspectives and questions how design can hold, reflect, and respond to the complexities of lived experiences.
This is an unmissable event for anyone interested in motherhood and creative practices.
This event is wheelchair accessible, with step-free access throughout the museum.
Speakers
Simone is a London-based multidisciplinary artist, designer and cultural storyteller working across furniture, sculpture, painting and public art. Trained in architecture at the Bartlett (UCL) and Design Products at the Royal College of Art, her practice explores “intimate architectures” - objects that mediate space, memory and identity. Simone has been widely exhibited and collected internationally, featured by The New York Times, and her work is held in the V&A, Museum of London, Walker Art Gallery and the Smithsonian.
Danielle is a curator, writer, broadcaster, and lecturer with a dual focus on contemporary craft and design, and eighteenth-century sculpture and decorative arts. Currently Curator at the Design Museum and Curator of Blitz: the Club that Shaped the 80s, Danielle was previously Curator of Making at the Museum of London and an assistant curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is a BBC New Generation Thinker, and the recipient of an Art Fund New Collecting Award.
Laxmi’s art merges elegance and precision, inspired by the human form and motherhood. Her intricately composed works challenge tradition, inviting engagement through intentional incompleteness. Blue, a constant in her palette, holds deep personal meaning—honoring her mother and reflecting her journey of self-discovery. Her work has collaborated with leading names including Tate, Soho House, Henry Moore Studios, Vogue, Penguin Books, and H&M Home, extending her influence across art, fashion, and literature.
Emefa is a London-based jewellery artist exploring what time conceals and nature reveals. Her work draws on volcanic and geological forces, transforming them into precious objects. Inspired by her childhood in Ghana, she uses lost wax-casting to layer gold and silver, creating evolving textures. From 2022 to 2025, she was Curator, Jewellery (Diaspora) at the V&A, and she holds an apprenticeship with the goldsmith to the Asantehene.
Hettie is a writer, curator, and former chief art critic for The i. She contributes widely, including to The Guardian and Apollo. She curated Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood and authored several books on art, motherhood, and material culture. She co-created the manifesto How Not To Exclude Artist Parents and co-founded the Art Working Parents Alliance. Judah also broadcasts, lectures, and mentors emerging artists.
