British Sign Language Tour London Festival of Architecture

BSL Tour: Architecture of the Museum and PLATFORM

As part of this year's London Festival of Architecture, discover the fascinating story of the museum building and our PLATFORM: Simone Brewster display in this group tour for D/deaf visitors who use British Sign Language and their companions, facilitated by Edward Richards.

What to expect

The iconic Design Museum building was formerly home to the Commonwealth Institute, which opened in 1962, and was designed by the architectural firm RMJM. After its closure in 2003, this unique Grade II* listed building stood vacant for more than a decade. The landmark building has been transformed by John Pawson’s design team, who have made it fit for the 21st century, reopening to the public in 2016 as the Design Museum.

From the magnificent hyperbolic parabola rooftop to the building's remarkable spatial qualities, this tour uncovers the lesser-known features and history of this very special structure.

This special tour will also include highlights from our current display PLATFORM: Simone Brewster. PLATFORM is an annual exhibition showcasing the work of designers who are making an impact on contemporary design discourse.

Simone Brewster is an artist and designer whose work plays with form, working across scales and disciplines and defying quick categorisation. She employs a visual language that is architectural and sculptural, rich with material histories and layered with references from palaeolithic fertility deities to African diasporic traditions.

This tour is suitable for D/deaf visitors who use British Sign Language and their companions.
