The Subjectivity of Colour
What to expect
From Isaac Newton to Bauhaus teacher Johannes Itten, some of the most influential theories of colour have emerged from personal experiences. But with the industrialisation of colour that subjective quality has been lost.
Today, there is no place for questioning in the objective, standardised RAL, Pantone or NCS colour systems. Pigments have been chemically optimised, made consistent and static. How can we open up colours again? How can we relate to them in a more intimate way?
In conjunction with the exhibition ‘Breathing Colour’ by Hella Jongerius, the Design Museum in collaboration with Disegno brought together a panel of leading designers to discuss the subjectivity of colour.

Oli Stratford
Oli Stratford has been the editor-in-chief of Disegno since September 2016, having previously served as the journal’s online and deputy editor. Outside of Disegno, examples of his journalism, interviews, essays and fiction may be read in books published by König Books and Gestalten among others.

Laetitia de Allegri
In 2014, Laetitia de Allegri founded de Allegri & Fogale with the designer Matteo Fogale. The practice works across multiple disciplines on projects ranging from industrial products and bespoke commons through to interiors and installations. Awarded the Wallpaper*Design Award in 2015, the studio’s work was exhibited at the V&A that same year.
Ab Rogers
Ab Rogers is a London-based designer known for a wide-ranging practice informed by his unique imagination. In 2004, he founded Ab Rogers Design, now an established studio known for projects that are rich with colour and energy, while providing a high level of functionality and subtlety in design.
Adam Nathaniel Furman
Adam Nathaniel Furman is a London-based designer whose practice ranges from Architecture & interiors, to sculpture, installation, writing and product design. He has worked at OMA Rotterdam, Ron Arad Architects, Farrells and Ash Sakula, and has written for Abitare, The RIBA Journal, Icon and The Architectural Review, among others.
