What to expect

Touch, reflection and strength. How do our objects help combat isolation in a pandemic world? How can we foster a sense of touch in an increasingly virtual world?

Selected from Wallpaper’s annual Graduate Directories, 20 designers from multiple countries have been invited to think freely about their experiences of a pandemic world. Their projects have explored their own personal and cultural backgrounds with inspiration coming from everyday life as well as the desire to connect with nature and the outdoors. The result is a unique collection of fresh ideas.

The designers were invited to create a piece that represents the functional and emotional connections to our ordinary objects using sustainable U.S. hardwoods including red oak, maple and cherry.

The resulting pieces are one-off objects and furniture of varying scale imagined for a wide variety of settings and executed to the highest standard. All 20 designs will be on display in the Design Museum.

American Hardwood Export Council

For over 30 years the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) has been at the forefront of wood promotion in Europe, successfully building a distinctive brand for U.S. hardwoods. AHEC’s support for creative design projects demonstrates the potential of these sustainable materials providing valuable inspiration. AHEC has pioneered the modelling of environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for hardwoods, an approach that has since been adopted by other industries.
