Communicating in a Post-Verbal World
Image-sharing apps like Instagram and snapchat have radically changed the way we communicate. What’s more, the enormous popularity of the emoji, used in texts and social media, has meant that people now rely increasingly on ideograms to reflect emotional states. But how are these new pictorial forms of communication affecting language and the way we interact?
This talk brought together leading experts in the field of social media, network cultures, design and technology to discuss the impact of visual communication in social media.
Alex Bec is the managing director and co-owner of the HudsonBec Group, which exists to enable creativity to thrive. The independent group includes media company It’s Nice That, Lecture in Progress, and the creative agency Anyways that commissioned stickers for Google’s Allo messaging app.
Mercedes Bunz is Senior Lecturer in media studies and journalism at the University of Westminster. Her work combines technology and digital media, philosophy, and publishing. Recent books include ‘The Internet of Things’ co-written with Graham Meikle. Previously she was technology reporter of The Guardian.
Jeremy Burge is the founder of Emojipedia, creator of World Emoji Day, host of the Emoji Wrap podcast and vice-chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee responsible for vetting new emoji proposals. Jeremy is an expert on emoji use and the changing state of this modern communication tool.
Oliver Franklin-Wallis is a Commissioning Editor at WIRED (UK). His work often focuses on design and the creative process: from profiling architects like Bjarke Ingels, to reporting from inside some of the world’s most creative companies, such as Pixar. His favourite emoji is the thinking face.
