Young Creatives: Summer School

The Joy of Set Design is a 1:1 scale film-set designing and film-making workshop devised and led by Scene Everything studio. Open to all young people within the 8 borough’s supported by the John Lyon’s Charity.

What to expect

Devised and led by Scene Everything studio, this three day course provided students with a chance to get creative and explore a rapid prototyping approach to realising ideas hands-on at full scale. Participants will work together in groups to create 1:1 scale environments with cheap, recyclable materials. Each environment was akin to a film set, offering a space which lends itself to a particular cinematic narrative or theme.

The groups were provided with basic printed instructions for the sets, which are there to be adapted and improvised upon by the participants’ imagination. Together they will be encouraged to explore potential narratives which could be housed inside their environments. There is also a chance for filmmaking, with short films made inside their sets shown in a screening to conclude the course. Making is not only a production process, but a creative one. By offering a situation to get making quickly, this course celebrated a hands-on approach to making ‘things’ and thinking about creating atmospheres, aesthetics and environments.
