Women, Fashion and Costume Design: Suffragette

On the weekend of International Women's Day, Jane Petrie, costume designer of Suffragette (to be released 2015), comes to the Design Museum for a one-off masterclass in costume design.

Suffragette is an upcoming British film, centering on the women’s suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. Starring Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Whishaw.

In this one off workshop, Jane Petrie, the film’s costume designer, will talk through her practice and approach to costume design, from the many different stages of research, sourcing and making, to working on specific characters and historical periods.

There will also be a show and tell handling session with costumes from the film. Jane will detail how different costumes were made, including replica items of original suffragette clothing.

More about Jane Petrie

Jane Petrie has been working as a costume designer for over fifteen years. Working on a number of high profiled projects, Jane has successfully established herself in the industry.

Her credits include; the highly acclaimed television series ‘Top Boy’ (dir. Yann Demange), ‘Black Mirror’ (dir. Otto Bathurst and Euros Lynn) and the Sky Atlantic series ‘Falcon’ (dir. Pete Travis and Gabriel Range).

Jane’s film credits include John Crowley’s ‘Is Anybody There?’, Daniel Barber’s ‘Harry Brown’, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s ‘28 Weeks Later’ and Duncan Jones’ ‘Moon’. Recently Jane worked with Kevin MacDonald on ‘How I Live Now’ and collaborated with acclaimed theatre director, Rufus Norris on his feature debut, ‘Broken’ which won the BIFA for Best British Film in 2012. Jane also collaborated with Andrea Arnold on ‘Fish Tank’ starring Michael Fassbender and teamed up again with Yann Demange on ‘71’ which received critical acclaim at the 2014 Berlinale Festival.

Jane has recently finished on Stephen Frears’ ‘Untitled Cycling Project’ for Working Title Films and continued straight after to shoot ‘Suffragette’ with director Sarah Gavron for Ruby Films starring Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep and Ben Whishaw. Jane is currently working with Michael Grandage on ‘Genius’ starring Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Colin Firth.
