Self-guided visits for learning groups
The new Design Museum welcomes schools, colleges and universities for self-guided visits of one of the opening exhibitions. Here is everything you need to know to plan an inspiring self-guided visit to museum.
The Design Museum has three exhibitions available for self-guided visits - Designer Maker User, Fear and Love: Reactions to a Complex World and Beazley Designs of the Year.
Designer Maker User is a free exhibition (bookable for learning groups) that tells the story of contemporary design. Entry times are available each hour from 10:00-15:00. This may take up to 60 minutes to see as a group.
Fear and Love: Reactions to a Complex World is a paid temporary exhibition and we advise that it may take up to 60 minutes to view as a group. Entry times are offered every 15 minutes from 10:00-17:00.
Beazley Designs of the Year is a paid temporary exhibition and we advise that it may take up to 60 minutes to view as a group. Each of these exhibitions may take up to 60 minutes to view as a group. Entry times are offered every 15 minutes from 10:00 - 17:00
Please allow 60 minutes to view each exhibition and choose your timeslots carefully to prevent any clashes. You may wish to also factor in a break for your group if you are coming to see multiple exhibitions during your visit.
Free Display: For the first time in the museum’s history it will have a free permanent display of its collection: Designer Maker User tells the story of contemporary design through these three interconnected roles.
Now in its ninth year, Beazley Designs of the Year celebrates design that promotes or delivers change, enables access, extends design practice or captures the spirit of the year. Someday the other museums will be showing this stuff.
Self-guided visits to Designer Maker User are free of charge, however booking is required.
Self-guided visits to temporary exhibitions: £3 per student for primary, secondary, further education and colleges £5 per student for universities £7 per student for all overseas students
Teachers and tutors are free on a ratio of 1:10 students. Any additional teachers will be charged the standard adult rate.
Paying self-guided visit cancellations need to be made in writing and 28 days/20 working days prior to a visit at the museum.
We ask that one teacher is present for every ten students. Please note that failure to comply with this request may result in admission being refused.
The Design Museum is open daily (excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day) from 10:00 to 18:00 – last entry 17:00.
The museum is fully accessible via wheelchair with lifts operating across all floors inside the premises. Unfortunately there is no parking provision on site for Blue Badge holders. However, please do consult the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea website for local parking bays.
On the day of your visit
The Design Museum has good public transport links via the underground, rail and bus. Due to limited space available in the local area for coaches, we recommend using public transport for your visit. Schools in the Greater London Area can apply for free transport when making visits to museums.
Please enter the museum by the main entrance on Kensington High Street. We ask that lead teacher or tutor contact the admissions desk on arrival – please leave students with additional teachers in the Atrium.
There is a common room onsite for students to have lunch – this must be booked in advance. Please ensure the room is clean and all food waste in the bin before leaving.
Teachers and accompanying adults are required to supervise students at all times while at the Design Museum. Please read the terms and conditions for guidance.
