Diversity in Craft

Rosy Greenlees, OBE, is Executive Director of the Crafts Council: national organisation promoting the value of craft and making to society. She is President of the World Crafts Council, a member of the UK government’s Creative Industries Council and sits on the University of Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design Faculty Advisory Board.

Ndidi Ekubia is a contemporary silversmith who has been creating stunning silverware from London since 1998. Through her use of traditional hand-raising techniques and inspirations from her African heritage, Ndidi’s statement pieces take on fluid and sensual forms with both a sculptural and functional identity, her work swirls with vitality.

Born in HK, now living and working in the UK, Peter Ting is an established tableware designer and his creations are collected in numerous museums globally. His interest in Blanc de Chine led him to visit Dehua in 2004 and when he stepped down from his trusteeship at the Crafts Council, in 2017, he created Ting Ying Gallery, where the ‘Buddha Hands’ coffee cups and saucers, ‘Flower Cylinder’ were acquired for the V&A collection.

Simone Brewster is a London-based British designer, with a diverse training which spans architecture, product design and jewellery. Calling upon the infusion of cultures and experiences she is exposed to during London life, she takes reference from her Caribbean background, placing it in a contemporary British context to expose a rich visual and social relationship.

Craft Conversations is part of London Craft Week, an annual event that showcases exceptional craftsmanship through a journey-of-discovery programme featuring hidden workshops and unknown makers alongside celebrated masters, famous studios, galleries, shops and luxury brands.

In 2016, the LOEWE FOUNDATION launched the international annual LOEWE Craft Prize to showcase and celebrate newness, excellence and artistic merit in modern craftsmanship.

The LOEWE FOUNDATION was established as a private cultural foundation in 1988 by Enrique Loewe, a fourth-generation member of LOEWE’s founding family. Today, the Foundation continues to promote creativity, organise educational programs and protect cultural heritage in the fields of poetry, dance, photography, design and craft. The Foundation was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts by the Spanish government in 2002.
