DESIGN FACTORY
Design Museum Student Project 08/09

Design Factory is the Design Museum’s new project for Higher Education design students, spanning fashion/textiles, product design, graphic design/illustration and architecture. We hope that tutors will build Design Factory into their core curriculum, and thereby helping to foster life-long, sustainable links and relationships between the Design Museum, Universities and the design communities of the future.

Part 1 (Autumn 08)
Colleges who register for participation will be able to incorporate the Part 1 Research Brief into their curricula for the autumn term, along with a Design Factory research visit to the Design Museum between 27 Oct 08 and 31 Jan 09. Part 1 Research Brief is written by Anthony Dickens, Brit Insurance Designs of the Year nominee. It is a multidisciplinary research brief which uses visits to Design Museum exhibitions as the primary source for inspiration. Exhibitions during this period include Design Cities and Alan Aldridge - the Man with the Kaleidoscope Eyes.

Please download the Research Brief PDF document.

Part 2 (Autumn 08)
Colleges can incorporate Part 2 of the Design Briefs into their curricula for the Autumn term. Part 2 of the Design Brief uses research from Part 1 and the urban theme ‘design city’ as primary sources of inspiration. Part 2 Design Briefs will be sent to registered participants.

Part 3 (Spring 09)
The Design Museum will host Design Factory judging days during February/March 09 to which students will be invited to submit project work. Students need to drop off or send their work to the Design Museum as flat artwork ie drawings, printouts or storyboards. Design Factory judging day submission forms will be available online and must be completed and attached securely to student work prior to submission. Student work will be reviewed by the Design Museum and a panel of Brit Insurance Designs of the Year nominees. Written feedback notes will be provided for each piece of work submitted and a selection of the best projects from each design discipline will be made.

Part 4 (Summer 09)
Selected students will be invited to attend a Design Factory Practitioner Symposium in May 2009 and their work will be showcased on the Design Museum website. The symposium will include a paper brief for students and contributions from Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2009 nominees.

Project participation fee is £10 per student and includes a special Design Factory Design Museum double entry ticket:
• Ticket 1 for Design Factory Research Visit (valid 27 Oct 08 – 31 Jan 09)
• Ticket 2 for Design Factory Judging Day / Visit (valid Feb/Mar 09)

Registration for Design Factory 2008/9 has now closed.
