Design Camp: Code Your Own Narrative for 11 to 14 year olds

This half-term, immerse yourself into the world of coding in this workshop where you will design a piece of interactive fiction.

Suitable for young people aged 11 – 14.

What to expect

Can you read a video game?

How does choice affect the way a story is told?

In this introductory workshop, learn how coding can be used to give players the ability to choose their path in a game and use the coding engine Twine to create your own interactive narrative.

You will build a non-linear story with a character arc and design a narrative story map for a basic mission with twists and turns to keep your player hooked.

Discover interesting ways to create a narrative, learn more about the history of storytelling and find out why video games are the biggest revolution in fiction since the invention of the novel.

Learning outcomes:

  • Basics of storytelling and narrative design

  • Basic coding concepts and how to apply them to logic problems.

  • Visualising storylines and creating mapping frameworks for them

  • Critical analysis and constructive feedback

Please note that all equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided for the duration of the session, but you must bring a packed lunch.
