What to expect
What makes Brazilian design so unique and compelling?
For the past several years, Brazilian design has attracted international attention. Although we are familiar with the work of its modernist masters - Oscar Niemayer, Jorge Zalszupin, Lina Bo Bardi, José Zanine Caldas, to name but a few – we rarely venture into the core philosophy and unique DNA of Brazilian design which combines European, African and tropical influences. The great architects of the past laid the foundations of a specific school of thought, a certain Brasilidade - Brazilianness - that left an enduring mark on generations that followed. But how do we define the spirit of Brasilidade today?
Curated by The Invisible Collection - trailblazers in promoting unique contemporary design - this talk explores the distinct qualities of Brazilian contemporary design. Led by Chris Larsen, Associate Curator, Modern and Contemporary, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a panel of leading designers and thinkers will examine how key social and cultural changes in Brazil are affecting design practice and production. The discussion will highlight the seminal work of Joseph Zanini de Caldas, whose centenary is celebrated with a travelling exhibition curated by ETEL and on show at The Invisible Collection.

Lissa Carmona
Lissa Carmona is a partner and curator of ETEL. She has researched and retrieved some of the history of Brazilian design through reediting pieces by Jorge Zalszupin, Oscar Niemeyer, Gregori Warchavchik, Lina Bo Bardi, Sergio Rodrigues and Lasar Segall. She has edited books about Branco&Preto, Sergio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin and, more recently, a notebook about architecture, art and design in the city of São Paulo. Lissa was the curator of the “Brazilian Masters” exhibition.
Carlos Ricardo Niemeyer
Carlos Ricardo Niemeyer’s extensive career spans marketing communications, sponsorship, product development and brand management. He is currently Director of the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation where he responsible for preserving the work and legacy of Oscar Niemeyer.
Anna Zaoui
Anna Zaoui is part of the jury at PAD London 2018, she recently joined the International Council of the Design Museum, and is a Hayward Gallery patron. Anna collaborates with several Interior Designers through her online platform, The Invisible Collection, the first e-commerce website to showcase and sell the bespoke furniture of the world’s best interior designers, handmade by craftsmen.
