Designers for our future selves
A thought-provoking talk revealing the thinking behind the ideas, trends and passions that are shaping our future selves. With Special Projects, Future Facility and Dr. Takanori Shibata.
This talk brings together designers at the vanguard of technology, design and innovation who are thinking about how design can help people lead fuller, healthier and more rewarding lives into old age.
Speakers include:
Special Projects: Adrian Westaway and Clara Caggero of Special Projects will talk about how to design in order to change people’s behaviour as well as tackling ageing stereotypes and stigma.
Future Facility: Isolation and loneliness are a well-documented part of the ageing process. In this talk, Sam Hecht will discuss designing for those feeling left behind and unable to navigate the world of new technology.
Dr Takanori Shibata: Will discuss his research interests which include human-robot interaction, robot therapy, mental health for astronauts and humanitarian de-mining. He will also discuss his invention certified as the inventor of a seal robot named PARO, the World’s most Therapeutic Robot, by Guinness World Records in 2002.
These designers are featured in in NEW OLD at the Design Museum from the 12 January to 23 February 2017. The exhibition asks whether designers are ready to meet the challenge of a rapidly ageing society. Hosted and chaired by exhibition curator Jeremy Myerson and Helen Hamlyn Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art.
Speakers
She is a designer, inventor and creative director. Whether this means helping the elderly to engage with technology or devising systems that help us focus on the present, Clara’s concepts bring empathy, optimism and clarity to where society needs it. She is a design-thinking speaker and visiting senior lecturer at the Royal College of Art and at Queen Mary University of London.
He is an inventor, engineer and experience designer on a mission to make the human-technology interaction meaningful and delightful. He is a tutor and lecturer in Design & Innovation at Queen Mary University and Goldsmiths, University of London, and a visiting faculty member at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design.
Industrial Facility and Future Facility were founded by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin. They have developed production projects for companies ranging from Emeco and Issey Miyake to Herman Miller and Mattiazzi, and have been World designers and advisors to Muji Japan since 2002.
He is a research scientist and Chief Senior Researcher at the Human Informatics Research Institute based in the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), In addition he is also Professor at the School of Computing, Tokyo Institute of Technology and Visiting Fellow The AgeLab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
