How and why do architects and designers use colour? Join a panel of high-profile practitioners, featuring Terry Farrell, to discuss what colour means to them and its role in their work.
The use of colour in architecture and interiors is a highly emotive issue. How and when do architects and designers use it? Is it an intuitive process or one that they have systems in place for? Is colour to be celebrated or eschewed in favour of materiality — and what part did twentieth-century Modernism play in how it is regarded in the profession?
Curated by Blueprint Magazine, this panel brings together several high-profile industry practitioners, with very differing approaches, to explain and discuss what colour means to them and how they use it — or don’t. The five panellists will each give a short presentation before discussing the issues together. The discussion will be followed by an open Q&A.

Sir Terry Farrell
Awarded the Royal Town Planning Institute’s Gold Medal in 2017, Sir Terry Farrell CBE is considered one of the world’s most influential architects, planners and urban designers. During 50 years in practice he has completed many award-winning buildings and masterplans, including Embankment Place and The Home Office Headquarters.
Andy Groarke
Andy Groarke, Co-director of Carmody Groarke : Andy co-founded Carmody Groarke with Kevin Carmody in 2006. He has lead the development of a number of award-winning projects, including the 7 July Memorial, Maggie’s Merseyside at Clatterbridge and Studio East Dining.
Antoni Malinowski
Antoni Malinowsk investigates the dynamic relationship between pictorial and architectural spaces and has collaborated with several eminent architects on permanent large-scale interventions in architecture. In 2012 he initiated the Saturated Space AA research cluster devoted to colour/space interactions.
John McEglunn
John McEglunn, Partner, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners: John has worked at RSHP for over a decade and is centrally involved in the company’s bids for new work. He led a large team through all stages of the British Museum World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre, completed in 2014.
Mark Bickerstaffe
Mark Bickerstaffe, Director of New Product Development for Kohler, Europe & Asia Pacific: Mark joined Kohler in 2004 and has led the global expansion of design across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. He has a Masters in Industrial design and previously led research, design and development for Dyson.
