Travelling into the Future: Work in Progress

This panel discussion uses the theme of ‘Work in Progress’ to examine travel and London’s transport systems, taking in cycle superhighways, Crossrail, telecommuting, speed and mobility amongst other aspects of urban travel.

Tickets include entry to the Designs of the Year exhibition before the talk begins. Doors will open at 18:30. The Designs of the Year exhibition will be open for ticket holders to view between 18.30 and 19:00, and will then close. The talk will start at 19:00 and last for 1 hour.

What's the talk about?

The evening brings together Tim Fendley, who has revolutionised the navigation of the city through Legible London, and Sam Pearce, who hopes to radically alter cycling through his Loopwheel design. They will be joined by Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic and urbanist author Leo Hollis, in a session chaired by Alastair Donald, a researcher on mobility and space and the British Council’s Project Director for the British Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale. Tickets include entry to the Designs of the Year exhibition before the talk begins.

Alastair Donald

Alastair Donald is the associate director of the Future Cities Project and convenor of the Future Cities Salon. For the British Council he’s Project Director of the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture biennale. An expert on urban planning and mobility and space, he is co-editor of The Lure of the City: From Slums to Suburbs (Pluto Press, 2011).

Deyan Sudjic

Director of the Design Museum in London, Deyan Sudjic's career has spanned journalism, teaching and writing. Deyan has published many books on design and architecture, most recently B is for Bauhaus, published by Penguin in March 2014. Deyan was made an OBE in 2000.

Sam Pearce

Industrial designer Sam Pearce set up his own product design company Jelly Products in 2006. In 2013, after several years of development and testing, he launched Loopwheels, innovative shock-absorbing wheels for bicycles using carbon composite leaf springs. Loopwheels was nominated for this year’s Designs of the Year.

Tim Fendley

Tim Fendley is an information designer, speaker, writer and founder of Applied, the wayfinding consultancy. A successful entrepreneur, Tim formed Metadesign in 1995 where he ran design programmes for Orange, The Economist, Lexus and Glasgow. He was the lead designer of the ground-breaking Bristol Legible City Initiative, and has a passion for city design.

Leo Hollis

Leo Hollis is the author of books on London and Paris, including The Phoenix: St Paul's Cathedral And The Men Who Made Modern London and The Stones of London. His most recent work is Cities Are Good For You: The Genius of the Metropolis. He writes for the Guardian and the New Statesman.
