Discover Design

Discover Design is an interactive online resource for primary and secondary teachers. It promotes analytical and creative approaches to design. Showcasing 18 products through images and films, it provides a framework for analysing design by asking key questions. It also includes downloadable resources and notes for teachers.

Commonwealth Building

In 2014 the former Commonwealth Institute, a landmark Grade 2 listed building in West London will be transformed into a new home for the Design Museum.

East Beach Café

East Beach Café is Thomas Heatherwick's first completed building. The challenge was to design a weather and graffiti proof structure with a long, narrow footprint that would provide a place of 'prospect and refuge' for beach users, all on a tight budget.

Pumpkin Vase

Made from recycled newspapers the Pumpkin Paper Vase shows how designers can re-use existing materials in innovative ways. It is relatively easy to damage and will not last forever, copying its namesake in behaviour as well as appearance.

Support your visit to the Design Museum

Discover Design aids successful planning, delivery and follow up of a school or group visit to the Design Museum. It supports students to learn how to look at design with a critical and creative approach, introducing objects in the museum’s handling and core collections.

The Teachers' Centre

The Teachers’ Centre gives an overview of the site and includes suggestions for use, for example digitally projected to initiate discussion at the start of a design project.
