Your Studio: extended Further Education workshops

Colleges and FE Workshops for level 3 design students mapped to core BTEC curricula. These workshops provide insight into professional design practice drawing on the museum’s exhibition programme, resources and network of practitioners.

Surface Pattern Value

To support Level 3 Fashion pathways for vocational learners, this workshop is also adaptable for students following Graphics, Product and Spatial design pathways.

Learning outcomes include:

• Investigation of a range of textiles, products and samples.

• Creating a pattern that expresses client (the Design Museum) values.

• Insight into professional design processes, including team work, collaboration, sketch-booking and visualisation of design ideas across a range of products and surfaces.

The Idea Generation

Skills learnt include time management, communication and teamwork to support Level 3 vocational learners from BTEC design courses. Also suitable for AS/A-Level and Foundation students.

Learning outcomes include:

• Collaborating to unpack problems, devise design briefs and develop ideas through analogue rapid prototyping using a wide assortment of imaginative designs and materials.

• A collaborative proposal enabling learners to reflect on their learning and processes and consider how design thinking enhances innovation and commercial viability.

Exhibition Hack

This exclusive workshop offers Level 3-4 vocational learners the chance to work on a realistic brief with the Design Museum as their client, drawing on the institution, its exhibitions, services and users as a context for designing.

Learning outcomes include:

• Conducting research into the design systems that make an exhibition experience (including display, learning, comfort, access, signage/ wayfinding).

• Applying creative problem solving to a key design problem or system in relation to a selected exhibition, considering the museum’s key users and stakeholders;

• Team development of mock design proposals, representing ideas professionally and creatively in a digital format, applying their ICT skills to communicate persuasively with their ‘client,’ the Design Museum.

Booking information

Workshops take place every Friday during term, in two time-slots:
10:30 – 12:15 and 12:45 – 14:30.

Minimum of 10 and maximum of 25 pupils per workshop. Price per FE student is £10. Accompanying staff are admitted free. Advance booking is essential (it is recommended to book workshops at least 12 weeks in advance). Ticket includes museum admission and workshop fee (including facilitation and materials).
