Nick Hornby: Slam - Penguin competition

Winning entry by Jack Noel, based on his hero Lily Allen

29 October 2007 – 25 November 2007

An exhibition in the café featured shortlisted entries from a poster design competition run by Penguin to promote the publication of Nick Hornby’s first novel for teenagers.

“In Slam, 16-year-old Sam has a poster of legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk on his wall. When his life takes a dramatic new twist he turns to Tony for guidance, striking up a dialogue with the poster that helps determine the direction of his life. The story reflects the power of graphic design and important part posters can play during adolescence”.

Seven current heroes of contemporary graphic design and illustration, between them responsible for hundreds of iconic album and magazine covers, ad campaigns and posters, were invited to design a poster of their teen hero. In addition they, along with Nick Hornby, chose their favourite images from hundreds of designs submitted in the national Slam poster design challenge for 13 to 25-year-olds. The shortlisted entries were on display in the Design Museum café.
